Banner Signs: What material should you choose?

Banners are among the most popular and common types of signage. You’ve probably noticed that they’re pretty much everywhere. Stores and restaurants display them prominently when they’re advertising a sale or promotion, or they may convey a simple “Welcome!” message at a school, church, business, or event like a trade show. Banners are also frequently used to announce that something is “Coming Soon.”

Typically, banners are temporary signs. They’re not durable enough to withstand the weather outdoors for an extended period without fading or otherwise becoming damaged. While this is definitely a drawback if you’re looking for a permanent sign, banners are inexpensive and can be printed quickly if you need one in a flash. They’re available in a variety of materials, including vinyl, mesh vinyl, fabric, and canvas. Here’s what you need to know about each of these common banner options, all of which can be printed in whatever size you need!

Vinyl Banners: The Most Popular Choice

Vinyl, a lightweight, sturdy, and inexpensive material, is by far the most popular choice for a banner sign. If you have detailed graphics, UV printing makes it possible to display full color graphics on your vinyl banner with a high level of precision. If you’re looking for a cheaper option and don’t need to display images, you can opt for one-color lettering. Vinyl banners are usually finished with a heat-welded hem and grommet holes for hanging.

Mesh Vinyl Banners: For Breathability

Mesh banners are also created from vinyl, but the mesh material allows for airflow. This makes them great for (temporary) outdoor use as they will not be as susceptible to flapping and wind damage as traditional vinyl banners. This is especially important when your banner is large, as more surface area results in more risk of wind damage. Mesh banners are often used to display advertisements and information on sports fields and at other outdoor events.

Nylon Banners: If You’re Looking for Fabric

If you want a fabric banner, nylon is the number one option, though fabric banners may also use polyester, other synthetic materials, or even satin. While not as sturdy as vinyl, nylon is also a popular banner material because it is inexpensive and lightweight. Nylon’s main benefit is that it can absorb the color when printed with graphics because, unlike vinyl, it is a porous material.

Canvas: For Sophisticated Banners

Looking for a higher end banner option? A woven canvas banner may be the solution you need. One popular usage for canvas banners is to display prints of artwork, as their texture is like that of an artist’s canvas. Typically, canvas banners are finished with a sewn hem. Depending on how you want to mount your banner, you can get canvas with grommet holes or with pole pockets.
